PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS WITH FISHER FOLK

In 2000, Developers Foundation launched a new program to work with subsistence fisher folk in advocating for policies that help conserve coastal habitats, and assist fisher folk in starting genuinely sustainable alternative livelihoods. Our focus on coastal resources and livelihoods is a strategic priority, since many marginalized people in the Western Visayas are living hand to mouth from the sea.

In our first project, which ended in mid-2001, we undertook a year-long study on the effects of Philippine trade liberalization on the coastal habitats and fisher folk livelihoods of Aklan. The resulting report, Signals of Distress, is available for order in hard copy or Adobe Acrobat. Please place your order by contacting Teresa Naraval at developersfoundation@yahoo.com. Reports are $15 per hard copy for overseas orders, and 500 pesos per copy for orders in the Philippines. The Adobe Acrobat version may be requested at no charge.

At this time, we are considering an expansion of advocacy-oriented research to other areas in the Western Visayas, or to other sectors (such as small farmers) in Aklan. We may also work with local fisher folk POs in starting sea-based fish culture projects where local conditions make this feasible. The new directions taken in this program will be announced in early 2002.
